  • Description

The FLN representatives who have been discussing with the French authorities the conditions for cease-fire talks to end the Algerian campaign left Melun by helicopter for Orly Airport, Paris, July 1, to return to their so-called provisional Algerian Government in Tunis.

While official circles in Paris appear to be optimistic about the possibility of a full-scale FLN delegation arriving in Paris soon, reports form Tunis describe the French attitude as "intransigent" and say that FLN Premier Ferhat Abbas will not open negotiations in France unless the French Government modifies its views.

It is reported from Paris that the Algerian emissaries were told at the secret Melun talks that cease-fire delegates would not be able to make any contact with the French press or public, and that they would not be able to visit M. Ben Bella, the FLN leader who has been in prison in France for the last four years, after having been captured while flying in a Moroccan plane from Rabat to Tunis. The emissaries were also not given a definite answer to their question when M. Ferhat Abbas would be received by General de Gaulle.

Two trade unions - the Communist - controlled CGT and the Christian union - have issued a joint statement together with teachers' and students' unions, saying they were determined to reply with all the means at their disposal, including a general strike, to any attempt by extremists to wreck the chance of peace in Algeria through a coup d'etat.
