  • Description

The body of the United States honorary consul in Cordoba, Argentina, John Patrick Egan, was found near a bicycle racetrack near Cordoba hours after the Argentine Government refused to negotiate with his kidnappers.

Mr Egan, 62, was found with a bullet between his eyes on Friday night (28 February) -- four hours after the kidnappers' deadline for the Government to prove four of their comrades arrested this year were alive.

His body was wrapped in the white flag of the Montoneros guerrillas, who claim to be the only true followers of the late General Juan Peron
After he was kidnapped on Wednesday, a Cordoba newspaper published a letter from him asking U.S. Ambassador Robert Hill to use his influence to have the four Montoneros released. He said if their demand was not completed in time, he would suffer.

A spokesman for the United States Embassy said it was also his Government's policy not to negotiate.
