  • Description

A BRITISH ARMY UNIT, ON PATROL IN THE WESTERN ADEN PROTECTORATE, TOOK SEVEN HOURS OFF FROM THEIR MANOEUVRES LAST FRIDAY TO HELP DELIVER CHRISTMAS GIFTS. THE SERVICEMEN WERE ENGAGED IN DESERT ROUTE-FINDING WHEN IT WAS FOUND THAT THEY WOULD PASS ALONG THE WESTERN COAST OF ADEN, NEAR TO PERIM ISLAND. AN ARMY AIR CORPS BEAVER AIRCRAFT WAS WAITING TO AIRLIFT THEM ACROSS THE 15-MILE STRETCH OF WATER TO THE LONELY ISLAND.

WHEN THE 28 SERVICEMEN WERE IN POSITION, A VALLETTA AIRCRAFT OF THE RAF DROPPED PARACHUTES LOADED WITH CRATES CONTAINING CLOTHES, FRUIT, RICE, FLOUR AND TOYS FOR THE ISLANDERS AND THEIR CHILDREN. THE GIFTS, FROM THE BRITISH FORCES IN ADEN, WERE WELCOMED BY THE IMPOVERISHED PERIM ISLANDERS. THEY NOW ONLY NUMBER 200, AGAINST THE 5,000 LIVING ON THE ISLAND IN THE 1930s. WHEN IT WAS AN IMPORTANT COALING STATION FOR LINERS.

THE AIRLIFT OVER, THE SOLDIERS WERE FERRIED BACK ACROSS THE STRAITS TO THE MAINLAND TO CARRY ON WITH THEIR TRAINING. ARMED PATROLS FREQUENTLY GO OUT ON 200-MILE TRIPS VISITING FORTS ALONG THE YEMEN FRONTIER, EXPLORING ROUTES, AND MAINTAINING THEMSELVES AND VEHICLES UP TO THE STANDARD NECESSARY FOR DESERT SOLDIERING.
