MINISTER CHAKULYA: "I, as Minister responsible for sport in Zambia, have welcomed the statement attributed to the President of the Supreme Council for Sport in Africa, Mr. A.A. ORDIA, during the current General Assembly of the Supreme Council for Sport in Africa being held in Lagos, Nigeria, to the effect that should New Zealand proceed with the proposed arrangement to invite the South African Springbok Rugby team to play in New Zealand later this year, the Commonwealth Members of the Supreme Council for Sport in Africa will not take part in the Commonwealth Games to be held in Christchurch in 1974.

In welcoming this statement I want to make it absolutely clear that this is very much in line with Zambia's declared policy of non participations in international sports activities with South Africa, because of it's racialist policy, as well as with those countries that play against South African teams. This same policy also applies to all racialist minority regimes, where teams are selected on the basis of the colour of one's skin.

This therefore means that Zambia will definitely stay away from the Christchurch Games if the Springbok Rugby Team plays New Zealand as planned. Thank you."
