Background: AN EXHIBITION OF CONTEMPORARY AFRICAN WRITING - THOUGHT TO BE THE FIRST OF ITS KIND IN THE WORLD - HAS OPENED AT THE AFRICA CENTRE IN LONDON.

THE PURPOSE OF THE EXHIBITION IS TO CREATE A GREATER AWARENESS OF WHAT IS BEING WRITTEN IN ENGLISH AND IN FRENCH BY CONTEMPORARY AFRICAN WRITERS ON THEMES RANGING FROM POETRY TO POLITICS. OF ALMOST 200 BOOKS ON DISPLAY, THE MAJORITY HAVE BEEN PUBLICISED IN THE 60'S AND THEY REPRESENT THE WORK OF WELL OVER 100 WRITERS. BECAUSE THE EXHIBITION WAS ARRANGED IN ONLY A FEW MONTHS, IT WAS NOT POSSIBLE TO OBTAIN MORE THAN A SMALL SELECTION OF BOOKS WRITTEN IN FRENCH BY AFRICAN AUTHORS.

THE AFRICA CENTRE, WHICH IS IN COVENT GARDEN, COMPRISES A LIBRARY AND ASSEMBLY HALL, AS WELL AS COMMITTEE AND CONFERENCE ROOMS. THE CENTRE WAS OFFICIALLY OPENED IN 1964 BY PRESIDENT KAUNDA OF ZAMBIA.
