    PROGRESS TOWARDS A SETTLEMENT OF THE BORDER DISPUTE BETWEEN ALGERIA AND MOROCCO WAS REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN MADE BY AN AD HOC COMMISSION OF THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY WHICH ENDED ITS EXTRA-ORDINARY MEETING IN ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA, ON SATURDAY (JULY 30) NIGHT.

    THE MEETING OF THE AD HOC COMMISSION WAS CALLED AT THE REQUEST OF MOROCCO FOLLOWING A SERIES OF BORDER INCIDENTS LAST MAY IN THE AREA OF THE TINDOUF OASIS, ON THE SAHARA BORDER BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES.

    CONFERENCE CIRCLES AFTER LAST SATURDAY'S MEETING SAID BOTH THE MOROCCAN AND ALGERIAN DELEGATIONS HAD ACCEPTED THE COMMISSION'S RESOLUTION. IT WAS UNDERSTOOD THE RESOLUTION WOULD NOT BE MADE PUBLIC UNTIL THE GOVERNMENTS OF THE TWO COUNTRIES AND THE O.A.U. MINISTERIAL COUNCIL HAD BEEN TOLD ABOUT THE CONTENTS OF THE COMMISSION'S DECISION. EARLIER, THE COMMISSION'S CHAIRMAN, M. GOURDO SOW, THE FOREIGN MINISTER OF MALI, HAD SAID THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE COMMISSION WAS NOT TO ARBITRATE, BUT TO CONCILIATE THE TWO PARTIES. THE MOROCCAN FOREIGN MINISTER SAID AFTER THE MEETING THAT THE PILGRIMAGE TO ADDIS ABABA HAD NOT BEEN IN VAIN.

    THE COMMISSION WHICH BEGAN ITS WORK ON MONDAY, JULY 25 CONSISTED OF REPRESENTATIVES FROM MALI (CHAIRMAN), ETHIOPIA (VICE CHAIRMAN), IVORY COAST, NIGERIA, SENEGAL, THE SUDAN AND TANZANIA. IN A COMMUNIQUE AT THE END OF THE MEETING, THE COMMISSION NOTED WITH GRATIFICATION THE RE-ESTABLISHMENT OF FRATERNAL RELATIONS BETWEEN MOROCCO AND ALGERIA.
