  • Description

In Montevideo on Tuesday (23 November), candidates for the General Elections were stopping up their campaigns for Sunday's (28 November) polling.

The elections are seen by some political observers as the most crucial in Uruguay this century, and many have predicted that the country's Government will be changed to follow along the lines of Chilean President Salavador Allende's Marxist Popular Front rule.

Blanco Party candidate General Aguerrondo has been competing for public attention with Jorge Batlle of the ruling Colorado Party. A Vice Presidential candidate in the elections is Senior Renan Rodriquez, and he too has been stopping up his campaign as election day approaches.

SYNOPSIS: As Uruguay prepares to go to the polls on Sunday to elect a President, hundreds of local officials and 139 members of Congress, the candidates are stepping up their final campaigns. Among the men in the running for the five-year Presidency term is General Aguerrondo of the main opposition Blanco Party. His policy is aimed at the more conservative countrymen the farmers and their workers.

Jorge Batlle is running for the ruling Colorado Party. His policy hinges towards the urban Liberal masses and follows the presidents set by Uruguayan President Jorge Pachecho Arece, who is trying to gain a plebiscite to allow the country's Constitution to be changed in order to gain re-election as Head of State for a further five-year term.

The 'Broad Front' Party is widely favoured to win the election-provided President Pachecho Areco's plebiscite does not go through-even though both the Colorado and Blanco parties have moved their campaigns up as voting day approaches.
