Background: In the Quarter Finals of the European WP Davis Cup tennis matches in Cairo, the Czechoslovakian team defeated the Egyptians four:one.

In the final game between Ismail el Shafei of Egypt and Jiri Hrebec of Czechoslovakia, which was played over two days, the final set went to Hrebec, 13:11.

Hrebec's scores against el Shafei were 8-6, 6-4, 3-6, 3-6, 13-11.

Czechoslovakia's victory qualifies the team for the semi-finals along with the Soviet Union, France, Romania, Spain, New Zealand and West Germany.
