  • Description

The Lebanese Government is to complain to the United Nations Security Council about the raids by Israeli aircraft which on Thursday (16 May) killed 48 people and injured 184 others. Most of the casualties were in the two southern Lebanese refugee camps at Ain Helweh and Nabatieh. Between them the two camps house approximately thirty thousand Palestinians.

The raids were Israel's reprisal for the attack on the school at Ma'alot in Northern Israel by Palestinian guerrillas on Wednesday (15 May). During the subsequent siege of the school house by Israeli troops, thirty people - including the Palestinians - were killed; twenty of them children.

At a news conference on Friday, the Lebanese Minister of Information, Mr. Fahmi Shahin, said that since 1967 Israeli attacks on Lebanon had killed 168 people and wounded 457, with 55 kidnapped. He said the figures did not include Palestinians living in the country.

In Beirut and Damascus, Palestinian guerrilla leaders denounced the raids by Israel and warned that because of them, their own attacks would be increased. One leader said the Palestinian retaliation would be faster than the Israelis expected.
