Background: During the tour of the eastern sections of India, the Queen and her consort Duke Of Edinburgh arrived in Calcutta on Feb. 17. Calcutta, the largest city in India with nearly five million population and concentrated with industries, was on of the major points of contact between the British East India Company and India nearly two centuries ago.
The crowded programme for the Queen included a visit to the National Agricultural Fair on Feb. 18 where the Bharat Krishak Samaj held a reception to the Queen and presented her with beautiful handicrafts.
As in other parts of India the Queen drew thousands of people wherever she went. It was a hot day in Calcutta, but the Queen was cheerful.
