Mr. Harry S. Truman, the former President of the United States, is in hospital in Kansas City. A hospital official described him as "very weak" today 21st January. Mr. Truman, who is 86, was brought to the hospital by ambulance from his home in Independence, Missouri.
Senator Harry S. Truman was thrust into the U.S. Presidency in 1945 by the sudden death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. When he stood for the Vice-Presidency few Americans through that he would ever be President. And few expected the he would be confirmed in office by a victory at the polls. In 1945 he faced the responsibilities of the delicate peace that followed World War Two in Europe. Mr. Truman attended the Potsdam conference on the future of Germany with Marshal Stalin and Mr. Winston Churchill, the British Prime Minister.
The war in the East, however, continued until Truman had made his first great decision. In August, 1945, after the atomic bomb had been successfully tested, he ordered that it should be dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Japan signed surrender terms in September 1945.
Twelve years later, Mr. Truman said: "we faced half a million casualties trying to take Japan by land. It was either that or the atom bomb. I didn't hesitate a minute, and I've never lost any sleep over it since."
Later, he passed the Marshall Plan which poured food and supplies into the war-damaged countries of Europe. And in 1948, against all predictions, he was returned to office after the closest Presidential contest since 1916.
During his second term of office, Mr. Truman formulated what was called the "Truman Doctrine". He said that America ought to support free people who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or outside pressure. "If we falter," he said, "we may endanger the peace of the world and we shall surely endanger the welfare of our own nation."
In 1950, the forces of North Korea invaded South Korea. Mr. Truman responded at once by sending U.S. troops, under the command of General McArthur, to the support of South Korea.
