Background: England were on the brink of defeat in the fifth test against Australia at Adelaide today (29 January), following another batting debacle against Australia's attack -- even minus the injured fast-bowler Jeff Thomson.

Set 404 runs to win, England had slumped to 94 for five wickets at the close of the fourth day's play.

Dennis Lillee, back to his best form, took a wicket in each of him first two overs, and ended the day with three for 21 runs. Max Walker snapped up the other two wickets at one stage. Only Keith Fletcher, 39 not out ??? the close, managed to make a respectable score against the Australian attack.
