THE FIRST SUNDAY OF MAY BROUGHT LONDON A RASH OF DEMONSTRATIONS AND MARCHES. THE MARCHES, IN HEAVY RAIN, WERE BY SOCIALISTS AND COMMUNISTS: THE CHIEF DEMONSTRATION WAS AGAINST THE GREEK GOVERNMENT AND TOOK PLACE OUTSIDE THE GREEK EMBASSY.

ONE OF THE MARCHES, FROM CHARING CROSS TO HYDE PARK FOR PARK, WAS ORGANISED BY THE LONDON LABOUR PARTY, THE TRADES UNIONS, AND THE CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETIES. IT INCLUDED SEVERAL LONDON MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT. ALTHOUGH THE MARCH WAS DESCRIBED AS "OFFICIAL", THERE WERE SOME SHOUTS OF "WILSON OUT" AND "NO WAGE FREEZE".

NEXT CAME A MARCH BY THE YOUNG SOCIALISTS, MANY OF THEM SHOUTING VICTORY TO THE "VIETCONG", AND FINALLY A RALLY BY THE COMMUNIST PARTY.

OUTSIDE THE GREEK EMBASSY, A HEAVY POLICE GUARD WAS READY FOR THE DEMONSTRATORS, AND EVERYTHING WENT OFF PEACEFULLY. ABOUT 600 LONDON GREEKS TOOK PART AS A PROTEST AGAINST THE NEW REGIME IN ATHENS, AND PLACARDS CALLED FOR THE RELEASE OF POLITICAL PRISONERS.
