  • Description

WHAT IS BELIEVED TO BE THE WORLD'S LONGEST CROSS-COUNTRY FLIGHT FOR A TURBO-PROP LIGHT PLANE WAS COMPLETED RECENTLY BY A BOEING GAS TURBINE-POWERED U.S. ARMY L-19 (L - Nineteen) (CQ) LIAISON PLANE, WHICH REACHED ALTITUDES OF 27-THOUSAND FEET.

THE 2,950-MILE (twenty-nine--hundred and fifty) FLIGHT WAS MADE FROM BOEING FIELD, SEATTLE WASHINGTON, TO PORT RUCKER, ALABAMA (place - source), BY MAJOR JACK CRANFORD (CQ), FLIGHT OPERATIONS OFFICER FOR THE U.S. ARMY AVIATION BOARD AT FORT RUCKER.

THE FLIGHT, DOWN THE WEST COAST AND ACROSS THE SOUTHWEST, WAS MADE IN 26 (twenty-six) ACTUAL FLYING HOURS, AND AT ALTITUDES OF FROM 20-THOUSAND TO 27-THOUSAND FEET.

UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE TURBINE ENGINE GIVE THE TINY PLANE ITS REMARKABLE ALTITUDE PERFORMANCE.

ACCOMPANYING THE SMALL PLANE ON ITS FLIGHT WAS ARMY OTTER (CQ), CARRYING JP-4 (J P -- FOUR) (CQ) FUEL, WHICH PROVIDED GROUND FUELLING FOR THE TURBO-PROP PLANE. THE OTTER PILOT WAS CAPTAIN J. H. STEBBINS (CQ) AND SP/4 CARL JOHNSON (CQ) WAS CREW CHIEF.

THE L-19 WAS CONVERTED TO TURBINE POWER BY BOEING'S INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS DIVISION, PRODUCERS OF SMALL GAS TURBINES AND IS THE ONLY TURBINE-POWERED PLANE OF ITS SIZE IN THE UNITES STATES. IT WAS USED AS AN ENGINEERING TEST BED FOR A BOEING PLANE DIVISION OF NORTHROP AIRCRAFT.

AN EARLIER L-19 POWERED WITH A BOEING TURBINE HOLDS THE WORLD'S ALTITUDE RECORD FOR LIGHT AIRPLANES OF 37,063 (thirty-seven--thousand sixty-three) FEET.

THE BOEING-POWERED L-19 WILL BE USED AT FORT RUCKER AS A TRAINING VEHICLE PRIOR TO DELIVERY NEXT YEAR OF THE ARMY'S TURBO-PROP EQUIPMENT.
