  • Description

The top seeded Australian pair, Margaret Court and Diane Fromholz, proved no match for South African Ilana Kloss and Australian Kerry Melville in the finals of the South African Open Women's doubles in Johannesburg on Monday (25 November).

Miss. Melville and Miss. Kloss had an easy straight sets victory 6-2, 6-3, in a match that lacked any real excitement.

Mrs. Court and Miss. Fromholz were never a happy combination and made numerous unforced errors. Mrs. Court often netted easy returns or overhit the ball.

Overall, it was not a good tournament for Mrs. Court, making a return to international tennis after giving birth to her second child. She was clearly not at her best, and lost the chance to win the women's singles after going down to Miss. Fromholz in the semi-finals on Sunday (24 November)
Kerry Melville, on the other hand, stood a good chance to add the premier singles title to her victories, after beating Nancy Gunter of the United States in the semi-finals.
