  • Description

A BIG EVENT IN THE WORLD OF ART TAKES PLACE AT THE END OF THE MONTH, WHEN 50 PAINTINGS BY KANDINSKY, BELONGING TO THE GUGGENHEIM FOUNDATION, ARE PUT UP FOR SALE AT SOTHEBYS, THE FAMOUS LONDON ART DEALERS.

DURING HIS LIFETIME, SOLOMON GUGGENHEIM, FOUNDER OF THE COLLECTION, BOUGHT A TOTAL OF 175 WORKS BY KANDINSKY - MANY FROM THE ARTIST HIMSELF. WHILE THESE PAINTINGS HAVE BEEN FREQUENTLY EXHIBITED, BOTH IN THE GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM AND IN NUMEROUS TRAVELLING EXHIBITIONS, IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN IMPOSSIBLE TO SHOW THE COLLECTION IN ITS ENTIRETY. FOR THIS REASON THE 50 WORKS ARE BEING OFFERED FOR SALE - SO THEY CAN BE SHOWN RATHER THAN BE KEPT IN THE VAULTS.

(BORN IN MOSCOW IN 1886, KANDINSKY DIED IN FRANCE IN 1944. AFTER STUDYING LAW HE MOVED TO MUNICH WHERE HE BECAME INTERESTED IN ART. IN 1912, ALONG WITH FRANZ MARC, HE EDITED 'DER BLAUE REITER' (THE 'BLUE RIDER') IN WHICH THEY REPRODUCED ART FROM ALL AGES THAT APPEALED TO THEM BY VIRTUE OF ITS UNCONVENTIONALITY AND SPIRITUAL AUTHENTICITY. KANDINSKY BECAME A LEADER OF THE FAMOUS BLUE RIDER MOVEMENT - A RALLYING POINT FOR MODERN ARTISTS. DURING THE FIRST WORLD WAR HE RETURNED TO RUSSIA, BUT BY 1922 HE WAS BACK IN GERMANY WHERE HE WORKED WITH PAUL KLEE, FEININGER AND JAWLENSKY - THE 'BLUE FOUR'. HE CONTINUED TO PLAY A LEADING PART IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF MODERN ART - NOT ONLY IN ITS EXPRESSION BUT IN ITS THEORY AS WELL - UNTIL HIS DEATH.)
