  • Description

On Wednesday (26 May) the United Nations Security Council voted unanimously to extend their peacekeeping force in Cyprus for another six months. Earlier the Council had met to consider Secretary-General U Thant's report on the island. His report put forward strong recommendations for extending the mandate of the force for another six months because of continuing tension between Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot communities on the island, and no lessening of the confrontation between the National Guard and armed Turkish-Cypriot elements.

The present 3,177-strong United Nations force comprises military units from Austria, Britain, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Ireland and Sweden, and police contingents from Australia, Austria, Denmark and Sweden.

SYNOPSIS: At the United Nations on Wednesday, members of the 15-story Security Council voted unanimously to extend their peacekeeping force in Cyprus for another six months. Their decision came after Secretary-General U Thant had put forward strong recommendations to extend the mandate of the force in his report to the security Council on the Cyprus situation.

U Thant's recommendations were based on the continuing tension between Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot communities on the island. He had also moved that there be no lessening of the confrontation between the National Guard and armed Turkish-Cypriot elements. U Thant had pointed out that any reduction in the size of the force would be inadvisable until tension on the island had eased.

The present United Nations force in Cyprus comprises military units from seven countries and police contingents, from Australia, Austria, Denmark and Sweden.
