  • Description

Foreign ambassadors in Hanoi, capital of North Vietnam, have visited the ruins of the city's Bach Mai hospital - destroyed in a bombing raid by United States - B-52 heavy bombers in December. They included the Soviet Union, French and The People's Republic of China Ambassadors, and representatives of other foreign diplomatic corps. Hanoi's Mayor, Tran Duy Hung, showed them around the ruins.

The bombing, which created an international wave of protests, was described as 'limited and accidental' in an official United States statement, and at first U.S. officials denied the hospital was totally ruined.

One of the strongest protests at the bombing of Bach Mai came from Sweden, which likened it to the Nazi terror attacks of the Second World War.

SYNOPSIS: Foreign Ambassadors in Hanoi, capital of North Vietnam, have toured the ruins of the city's Back Mai hospital - destroyed in United States bombing raids in December. In the face of international protests, U.S. officials had denied that the hospital was totally ruined - saying the damage was 'limited and accidental'.

In the party, shown round by Hanoi's mayor, were the Ambassadors of the Soviet Union, France, The People's Republic of China, and Sweden. It was the Swedish Government which made one of the strongest protests at the time - likening the bombing to the Nazi terror attacks of the Second World War. Other diplomatic representatives were also included. During the inspection the party heard air raid warnings three times. An unknown number of people died in the raid, which was part of a mass attack on targets in and around Hanoi.
