  • Description

The month-long autumn Export Commodities Fair has closed in Canton. The organisers claim a compete success, with more business transacted than ever before. Some 23,000 foreign and overseas Chinese have attended during the past four weeks. The Japanese again provided the largest visiting contingent. A record number of 2600 Japanese trading houses and manufacturing concerns took part. They concluded deals with Chinese state trading corporations estimated to be worth more than US$200 millions. The total number of contracts is put at well above the 200 concluded at the spring fair. Japanese companies won long term contracts for the import of talc, fluorite, foodstuffs and silk fabrics for the firs time since they started trading with China. This was in addition to other contracts for textiles, industrial raw materials and agricultural goods. Japan in turn sold China large quantities of chemicals. The traditional closing banquet included farewell speeches by the organisers who noted that the Japanese were taking part for the first time since relations between Japan and China were normalised. Toasts were during Chairman Mao Tse-tung and to continued friendship and international co-operation.
