Background: Mrs Pat Nixon, wife of the United States President, was entertained by a troupe of dancers in Monrovia on Tuesday (4 January), the day after she attended the swearing-in ceremony of Liberia's President Tolbert. With her was President Moktar Ould Daddah of Mauritania. During the fun Mrs Nixon tried on a lappa, a local costume, and joined in the dancing.

The next day, Wednesday, Mrs Nixon left Liberia for Ghana. President Tolbert saw her off at the airport.
