The United National Salvation Front banner carries the golden silhouette of the five towers of Angkor Vat, one of the greatest monuments of Khmer architecture. Under this banner Kampuchean patriots fought against and toppled the Pol Pot-Yeng Sari regime this January. Angkor Vat is a symbol of the national greatness of Kampuchea, a symbol of the talent and industriousness of Kampuchean people, their lover of freedom and independence.
Angkor Vat's is an unusual story. With the decline of the Angkor empire these parts become desolate, impassable tropical forests engulfed this treasured temple. It was only at the turn of the last century that Angkor was uncovered in the thick jungle. After having been restored the magnificent temple was born anew as it were.
Angkor is not only splendid architecture. It contains inimitable samples of ornaments, bas-reliefs, statues of striking beauty made by nameless Khmer artists.
Luckily the place was almost intact during the hostilities. Under the Pol Pot -Yeng Sari regime it suffered considerably from total neglect. The Pol Pot clique treated with ??? all national monuments of Kampuchea and all the national customs and traditions.
From the first days after the former regime Angkor came under the protection of the popular revolutionary government. A plan is currently being drawn to restore Angkor.
