    IN SAIGON YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) A MEMORIAL SERVICE WAS HELD FOR THE TWO AMERICANS KILLED IN THE EXPLOSION WHICH SEVERELY DAMAGED THE AMERICAN EMBASSY BUILDING IN SAIGON.

    AT THE SOUTH VIETNAM AIR FORCE BASE OF TAN SON NHUT THE FOREIGN MINISTER, TRAN VAN DO, AND THE AMERICAN DEPUTY AMBASSADOR, MR. U. ALEXIS JOHNSON, LED THE MOURNERS IN THE SERVICE. THE MINISTERS PINNED MEDALS OF GALLANTRY ON THE FLAGS COVERING THE TWO COFFINS. A WREATH WAS PLACED AT THE FOOT OF THE TWO COFFINS AS THE GUARD OF HONOUR SALUTED. THE COFFINS WERE LATER FLOWN TO THE UNITED STATES.

    ONE OF THE TWO AMERICANS WHO DIED IN THE EXPLOSION ON TUESDAY WAS A SECRETARY, 21-YEAR-OLD MISS BARBARA ROBBINS. SHE WAS SENT BY THE STATE DEPARTMENT TO SAIGON IN AUGUST 1964 FOR A TWO-YEAR ENGAGEMENT. THE OTHER DEAD PERSON WAS AN AMERICAN SERVICEMAN.

    A CAR, PACKED WITH 250 LBS OF EXPLOSIVES, WAS DETONATED BY THE VIET CONG IN FRONT OF THE U.S. EMBASSY BUILDING. BESIDES THE TWO DEAD AMERICANS ANOTHER 52 WERE INJURED; 19 VIETNAMESE WERE KILLED AND 131 INJURED. MOST OF THE VIETNAMESE WERE CASUAL PASSERS-BY AND THEIR FATE PROVOKED THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE GOVERNMENT TO DESCRIBE THE INCIDENT AS "AN ACT OF SAVAGERY".
