THE RECEPTION WAS FOR A PATIENT...DOROTHY FISHER...WHO IS SOUTH AFRICA'S ONLY SURVIVING TRANSPLANT PATIENT. A WEEK EARLIER, ON THE SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF HER TRANSPLANT OPERATION, PROFESSOR BARNARD HAD REFLECTED THAT DOCTORS WERE NO LONGER REFERRING PATIENTS TO HIM, BUT WERE "SENDING THEM HOME TO DIE."
