  • Description

AN AFRICAN SCHOOLTEACHER IN RHODESIA ON TUESDAY (MARCH 21) ENTERED THE RACE TO BE THE FIRST MAN KNOWN TO FLY SUCCESSFULLY UNDER HIS OWN POWER. HIS "AIRCRAFT" LIMBA IV, DIDN'T GET OFF THE GROUND, BUT SANDERSON CHIRAMBO, HAS HOPES FOR FUTURE FLIGHTS.

IN 1959, THE MANPOWERED FLIGHT COMMITTEE OF THE BRITISH ROYAL AERONAUTICAL SOCIETY OFFERED GBP5,000 (STERLING) TO THE FIRST MAN TO STAY ALOFT OVER A FIGURE-OF EIGHT COURSE AROUND TWO POSTS HALF A MILE (KM) APART - AND LAND AGAIN. THIS MONTH IT DOUBLED THE PRIZE MONEY, AND OPENED THE COMPETITION TO NON-COMMONWEALTH AVIATORS.

TEMPTED BY THE BRITISH OFFER, AND GBP1,000 OFFERED BY A SOUTH AFRICAN BUSINESSMAN, MR. CHIRAMBO CONVERTED AN ABANDONED BICYCLE AND PRODUCES LIMBA I. IT DIDN'T FLY! NOR, FOR THAT MATTER DID ITS TWO SUCCESSORS.

ON TUESDAY, LIMBA IV MADE A SERIES OF FRANTIC SPRINTS DOWN THE PLAYING FIELD OF GLENARA ESTATES AFRICAN SCHOOL, 10 MILES FROM SALISBURY, AGAIN WITH NEGLIBLE RESULT.

MR. CHIRAMBO SPENT ABOUT GBP200 STERLING ON LIMBA IV. FOR ITS SUCCESSOR HE PLANS A MUCH LIGHTER MACHINE WITH A GREATER WINGSPAN. AND HE HAS EVERY CONFIDENCE THAT HE'LL BEAT HIS COMPETITORS INTO THE AIR.
