  • Description

OVER 7,000 PROTESTANTS CONVERGED ON THE NORTHERN IRELAND PARLIAMENT BUILDINGS AT STORMONT CASTLE, BELFAST, TODAY(TUESDAY) TO PROTEST AGAINST PROPOSED REFORMS IN FAVOUR OF NORTHERN IRELAND'S CATHOLIC MINORITY.

THEY WERE LED BY MILITANT CLERGYMAN IAN PAISLEY, WHO HAD ORIGINALLY CALLED FOR A TURNOUT OF 100,000 PROTESTANTS AT STORMONT TO LOBBY THEIR LOCAL MPs ABOUT THE REFORM.

TODAY MARKED THE INTRODUCTION IN NORTHERN IRELAND PARLIAMENT OF PRIME MINSTER JAMES CHICHESTER-CLARK'S REFORM PROGRAMME TO SATISFY THE GRIEVANCES OF THE PROVINCE'S ONE-THIRD CATHOLIC MINORITY.

WHILE THE REV. PAISLEY AND HIS SUPPORTERS CLAMOURED OUTSIDE IN PROTEST, MAJOR CHICHESTER-CLARK THREATENED TO RESIGN UNLESS THE CATHOLICS OF NORTHERN IRELAND WERE GIVEN JUSTICE.

TWO JOURNALISTS COVERING THE TURN-OUT WERE BEATEN AND JOSTLED BY THE CROWD; ONE WAS A REPORTER FROM AN AMERICAN TELEVISION NETWORK, THE OTHER A CORRESPONDENT FROM THE BRITISH SUNDAY TIMES. OPPOSITION CATHOLIC M.Ps WERE ALSO JOSTLED AND JEERED AT.

AT ONE STAGE THE REV. PAISLEY HIMSELF HAD TO HELP RESTRAIN HIS SUPPORTERS AND STOP THEM FROM PRESSING FORWARD TOWARDS THE DOORS OF THE PARLIAMENT BUILDING.

BEFORE THE CROWD DISPERSED, THE REV. PAISLEY THREATENED THAT HE WOULD CALL A GENERAL STRIKE UNLESS THE VIEWS OF WHAT HE CALLED HIS "PROTESTANT LOYALISTS" WERE HEARD. DESPITE THE UGLY MOOD, MAJOR CHICHESTER-CLARK SAID THAT NOW NORTHERN IRELAND HAD A CHANCE FOR A FRESH START OF THE REFORM PROGRAMME WAS PASSED.
