Background: About a thousand demonstrators gathered near Rome's famous Colosseum on Tuesday (10 December) in protest at the plight of the many thousands of homeless people in the city.
They marched from the Colosseum to the City Hall causing traffic jams at many points along the rout of their march.
At the City Hall a delegation was allowed to present its protests about the housing situation to a representative of the council.
Some estimates of the number of those who have no permanent roof over their heads, of those who live in pathetic shanty-dwellings made of corrugated iron and cardboard, put the figure as high as 200,000.
The ranks of the marchers on Tuesday were swollen by striking industrial workers in Rome. They staged a four-hour walkout as part of continuing union action to press for an increase in cost-of-living payments.
