  • Description

An estimated 40,000 Khmers staged a big anti-Communist demonstration in the streets of Phnom Penh on Tuesday (21 September 1971).

The demonstrators--mainly Buddhist monks, students, teachers and government employees--carried banners protesting against North Vietnamese and Viet Cong presence in the Khmer Republic.

They also included 250 bereaved villagers mourning the loss of relatives executed by the communists during the year-long occupation of the Baray region north of Phnom Penh.

At the end of the march, the demonstrators crowded in front of the national monument to remember fellow-Khmers who have died in the 18 months since the Indo-China war spilled over into their country.
