    57 PEOPLE WALKED AWAY FROM THE WRECKAGE OF A PAN AMERICAN BOEING 707 AIRLINER WHICH CRASHED AND BURST INTO FLAMES EARLY YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) NEAR CALCUTTA AIRPORT.

    SIX PEOPLE (AN AIR HOSTESS, FOUR WOMEN PASSENGERS AND A CHILD) DIED IN THE CRASH. 24 PASSENGERS WERE INJURED, ONE OF THEM SERIOUSLY.

    THE FIRE BEGAN IN THE TAIL-SECTION OF THE FOUR-ENGINED JET AND SPREAD THROUGH THE AIRCRAFT, WHICH WAS CARRYING 53 PASSENGERS AND A CREW OF 10 ON THE TOKYO-LONDON LEG OF A ROUND-THE-WORLD FLIGHT FROM LOS ANGELES TO NEW YORK.

    RESCUE WORKERS, FIREFIGHTERS AND AMBULANCES HAD DIFFICULTY IN REACHING THE SITE - AT DUM DUM, 18 MILES FROM CALCUTTA - THROUGH WATER-LOGGED RICE FIELDS.

    ONE OF THE SURVIVORS WAS THE ANGLICAN BISHOP OF HONG KONG, THE RIGHT REVEREND GILBERT BARKER, WHO WAS UNHURT.
