  • Description

About 50,000 refugees went on the tenth pilgrimage May 1, to the church of the Virgin Mary, Ellwangen, near Stuttgart, in West Germany. Many of them were members of the "Catholic Action" group a collection of refugee organisations, working to re-open the Catholic church in the communist countries of Europe.

For the "World Refugee Year" pilgrimage, there were delegations from Poland, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Ukraine as well as West Germany and several East European countries.

The Catholic Bishop of Rottenburg, Dr. Leiprecht said high-mass in the open air, before the great crowd. Later they were addressed by Dr. Adenauer. He thanked them for the confidence and diligence they had shown in their new home, and told them that West Germany would not stand where it is today without them.
