Background: DR. ERHARD, THE WEST GERMAN CHANCELLOR, ACCOMPANIED PRESIDENT JOHNSON ON A VISIT TO THE STONEWALL HIGH SCHOOL GYMNASIUM FOR A BARBACUE LUNCHEON TOGETHER WITH 100 GUESTS.

DURING THE LUNCHEON, PRESIDENT JOHNSON PRESENTED DR. ERHARD AND EACH MEMBER OF HIS PARTY WITH A TEXAS "10-GALLON HAT". HANDING OUT MORE THAN 30 OF THESE HATS, THE PRESIDENT SAID THAT SINCE THE GERMANIC ATMOSPHERE OF THE OCCASION WAS SO GREAT, HE SHOULD HAVE CALLED THEM "40-LITRE HATS". A CHOIR SANG A POPULAR LOCAL SONG "DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS", FOLLOWED BY SOME GERMAN NATIONAL DANCES PERFORMED BY A LOCAL DANCE GROUP. VAN CLIBURN, THE NOTED YOUNG TEXAS PIANIST, PLAYED BEETHOVEN TO THE DELIGHT OF HIS LISTENERS.

THE OCCASION WAS MOST SUCCESSFUL, AND THE PRESIDENT HELD DR. ERHARD'S HAND HIGH IN THE AIR IN SALUTE TO THE ENTHUSIASTIC APPLAUSE FROM GUESTS. LATER, THE CHANCELLOR WENT BY HELICOPTER TO A NEARBY AIR FORCE BASE, HELD A NEWS CONFERENCE, AND LEFT FOR GERMANY.

OBSERVERS HAVE NOTED WITH INTEREST THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A "SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP" BETWEEN WEST GERMANY AND THE UNITED STATES AS A RESULT OF THIS VISIT. AT THE FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE, DR. ERHARD SAID THAT BESIDES HAVING CONTACT WITH THE PRESIDENT THROUGH NORMAL DIPLOMATIC CHANNELS, HE WOULD BE IN CLOSER CONTACT THROUGH PERSONAL LETTERS. COMMENTATORS REGARD THIS AS A SIGNIFICENT UPGUARDING FOR WEST GERMANY IN THE ATLANTIC ALLIANCE.
