    In Buddhist Thailand, the holy "Vesak" day, May 12 - anniversary of the birth of Buddha - was celebrated throughout the country in thousands of temples. Uniformed soldiers mixed with saffron-robed monks at a mass prayer meeting in Bangkok's Temple of Emerald Buddha and a traditional procession was headed by Thailand's King Phumiphol Adulyatej and Queen Sirikit.

    "Vesak" day is an occasion for Thailand Buddhists to re-dedicate themselves to the ideals of Buddha and to them it is an opportunity to stress the importance of the Buddhist philosophy and way of life. The day is celebrated throughout Asia - from India, Ceylon and Burma to Thailand, Malaya and Japan.
