  • Description

The leading Chinese newspaper, the People's Daily, devoted almost its entire front page on Thursday to reports of the previous day's announcement of a Vietnam peace settlement, which China has welcomed warmly.

Hundreds of people crowded round stands in front of the newspaper's building where this edition was displayed.

The People's Daily which is the organ of the Chinese Communist party, led with the communique issued by the North Vietnamese Foreign Ministry on the agreement and also carried extracts of President Nixon's television address.

China has been backing Communist forces in Vietnam since the establishment of the People' Republic in 1949 -- first the Viet Minn and latterly South Vietnamese Communist forces and their North Vietnamese allies. Until 1869, when President Johnson ordered a bombing pause, China had up to 40,000 engineers in North Vietnam helping to rebuild bomb-damaged roads, bridges, and railways.
