Background: The fifth Pan Arabic Games opened in Beirut on Saturday (1st September). The games, with 1,445 participating athletes from thirteen Arab states, last for sight days.
All the competitors are students, and, during opening ceremonies on Saturday, they paraded in the Sports City Stadium in front of a large crowd and Mr. Takieddin Selh, the Lebanese Premier.
In the swimming events that began on Sunday, the Egyptian team won four gold medals and the Lebanese team two gold medals.
SYNOPSIS: The fifth Pan Arabic Games got underway in Beirut's Sports City Stadium on Saturday.
About fifteen hundred athletes, all of them students, are taking part.
For eight days, teams form thirteen Arab nations are competing against one another for gold, silver and bronze medals.
A large crowd watched the opening ceremonies on Saturday evening. The Lebanese Prime Minister, Mr. Takieddin Sohl, was there to welcome the competitors, and watch the parade.
Besides the athletes, there are also 300 administrators to supervise and judge the events. The teams come from large and small countries all over the Arab world.
By Sunday night the host-country team was already gathering gold medals. Lebanon had won the gold and one bronze medal in the swimming events alone.
Egypt, Algeria, and the Palestinian team also did well in the swimming events.
