  • Description

Paraguayan President Alfredo Stroessner arrived at Santa Cruz airport in Bolivia on Wednesday (July 4th), for a goodwill visit. He was welcomed by President Hugo Banzer.

The two countries are neighbours and both Presidents stressed the need for closer links between them.

At the airport, President Stroessner, who very rarely travels abroad, reviewed a parade of veterans from the bloody war of the Chaco which was fought between the two countries in the 1930s.

The meeting was described as 'historic'. Relations between the two countries have long been coloured by the war.

President Banzer said that both countries shared the background and disciplined attitudes which came with army training. The Paraguayan leader recently assumed control of the armed forces. President Stroessner came to power in 1954 and is by far the longest serving head of state in Latin America.
