  • Description

A young gunman, identified as a security officer at the Israeli Embassy in Johannesburg, gave himself up on Tuesday (29 April) after holding the Embassy staff of 21 hostage for a day and a night.

His surrender ended a siege which at one stage had police convinced they were dealing with a guerrilla gang of up to six members.

Heavily armed security forces had surrounded the building and were preparing to attack when the gunman gave himself up. At that stage he held only two hostages, having released the other 19 one by one.

The man was identified as David Protter, a South African Jew, who held out for 16 hours in the fifth-floor Embassy.

South African Police Minister James Kruger later said Protter was "a young man with some political axe to grind".

He brought terror to the centre of Johannesburg on Monday, spraying the streets with bullets from an automatic weapon.

Police gave the official toll in the siege as one dead -- the Israeli Vice-Consul, Mr. Giorga Raviv -- and 37 people wounded.

Protter was taken to Pretoria jail for questioning. He will probably be charged with murder, which carries the death penalty in South Africa.
