  • Description

The Chinese and Soviet Union representatives expressed support for developing nations over the supply and export of raw materials at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Nairobi on Tuesday (11 May).

The Chinese representative, Mr. Chou Hua-Min, told the conference that the struggle waged by the Third World nations in the economic field had witnessed great developments. The old international economic relations were being destroyed and replaced by a new economic order.

Mr. Chou, Vic-Minister for Foreign Trade, praised the moves by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to protect its oil and create wealth for its members' people. The oil struggle gad tremendously heightened the fighting spirit and confidence of developing countries in their united fight against international plunder and monopoly.

Mr. Chou said that the adoption of the declaration on the establishment of a new international economic order, and the programme of action by the United Nations General Assembly, was a great victory for the Third World.

Later, the representative of the Soviet Union, Foreign Trade Minister, Mr. N. P. Patolicher, accused capitalist nations of exploiting Third World countries. He said that the Soviet Union and other Socialist states did not pillage or plunder the countries of Latin America, Africa or Asia. Mr. Patolicher also accused Western nations attending the conference of withdrawing billions of dollars (pounds) from developing nations in 1975.
