    SUDAN'S NEW CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY RE-ELECTED MOHAMED AHMED MAHGOUB AS PRIME MINISTER AND ISMAIL EL-AZHARI AS PRESIDENT OF THE COUNCIL OF STATE YESTERDAY (MONDAY).

    PRIME MINISTER MAHGOUR AND HIS GOVERNMENT HAD RESIGNED TWO DAYS PREVIOUSLY IN ORDER TO ENABLE THE NEW ASSEMBLY TO CARRY OUT THE APPOINTMENTS. HIS RE-ELECTION WAS EXPECTED, AND HE WAS ALSO EXPECTED TO CONTINUE THE GOVERNMENT COALITION OF THE UNITED DEMOCRATIC PARTY AND A FACTION OF THE UMMA PARTY HEADED BY IMAN EL MAHDI.

    THE UNITED DEMOCRATIC PARTY IN ITSELF A COALITION OF PRESIDENT AZHARI'S NATIONAL UNIONISTS AND MR. MAHGOUB'S PEOPLE'S DEMOCRATIC PARTY. IT WON 101 OF THE 218 SEATS IN THE ASSEMBLY DURING TWO-WEEK ELECTIONS WHICH BEGAN ON APRIL 18.

    THE MAIN TASK OF THE NEW ASSEMBLY IS TO GIVE SUDAN A PERMANENT CONSTITUTION.

    PRIME MINISTER MAHGOUB WAS EXPECTED TO FORM A NEW CABINET AND HE PROMISED THE ASSEMBLY THAT HE WOULD BE PRESENTING HIS GOVERNMENT SHORTLY, AND WOULD ALSO BE OUTLINING GOVERNMENT PROGRAMMES.

    SYNOPSIS: THE FIRST MEETING OF SUDAN'S CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY WAS HELD IN THE CAPITAL, KHARTOUM, YESTERDAY (MONDAY), TO APPOINT GOVERNMENT LEADERS.

    IN NATIONAL COSTUME IS THE NEW MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS, ALI ABDUL URAHMAN.

    ANOTHER ARRIVAL WAS THE BRITISH AMBASSADOR.

    MR. MOHAMMED DAWOOD WAS GREETED BY THE OFFICER IN COMMAND OF THE SUDANESE ARMY, GENERAL KHAWAD.

    THE LEADER OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY IN SUDAN, MR. ABDUL KHALIG.

    ASSEMBLY MEMBERS TOOK THEIR PLACES. THIS IS THE SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE ASSEMBLY MR. ALI.

    THE ASSEMBLY RE-ELECTED MOHAMED AHMED MAHGOUB AS PRIME MINISTER AND ISMAIL EL-AZHARI AS PRESIDENT OF THE COUNCIL OF STATE.

    THE NEWLY ELECTED MEMBERS OF THE SUPREME COMMISSION TOOK THE OATH AND THEN PRIME MINISTER MAHGOUB WALKED TO THE PLATFORM. HIS RE-ELECTION HAD BEEN EXPECTED AND HE AND HIS GOVERNMENT HAD RESIGNED TWO DAYS PREVIOUSLY TO ALLOW THE NEW ASSEMBLY TO CARRY OUT THE APPOINTMENTS. MAHGOUB WAS ALSO EXPECTED TO CONTINUE THE COALITION BETWEEN THE UNITED DEMOCRATIC PARTY AND THE FACTION OF THE UMMA PARTY HEADED BY IMAN EL MAHDI.
