  • Description

At least 2,000 Turkish students marched to the Saint Sofia Museum in Istanbul on Saturday (25 October) in protest against the killing of two Turkish ambassadors during the past week.

The demonstration around the museum a symbol of Greek orthodoxy coincided with the return home to Ankara of the body of one of the murdered ambassadors. Mr. Danis tunalagil, who was shot in his Vienna Embassy on Wednesday.

The demonstrators also carried posters of Mr. Ismaili Erez ambassador to France who was killed in Paris on Friday (24 October). The two deaths are being described by officials in Ankara as part of a systematic reign of terror against Turkey's diplomatic corps.

The Greek Orthodox and Armenian Patriarchs in Istanbul have condemned the murders as bloodthirsty and inhuman acts.

It is still not known who killed the two ambassadors but speculation in Turkey fanned by newspaper headlines has centred on the theory that a fanatical pro Greek coup was at work.
