  • Description

Sir Robert Tredgold, Federal Chief Justice of the Federations of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, resigned from office, Nov 1, in protest against the new Law and Order Act introduced by the Southern Rhodesia Government. In a press statement he said the Bill "outraged almost every basic human right." Under the Bill the Government has arrested hundreds of out of work Africans and placed them in detention camps.

At his home in Salisbury, Sir Robert said he would try and form a political movement to form a Southern Rhodesian united front. This movement will have nothing to do with party politics. The former Chief Justice said for some time he has been under pressure to return to political life.

Telegrams from many parts of the world have reached him covering a wide variety of reactions to his decision. It is thought that Sir Robert will lead a none racial group that will try and force the Government to drop the Bill.
