  • Description

In the Ivory Coast, representatives from 20 countries have been attending a conference on coffee which began in capital of Abidjan on Monday (5 December). It was the first time a meeting of the International Organisation for Standardisation had been held in Africa. The 60 delegates were meeting to discuss ways to reach agreement among producers and consumers of coffee on industrial and commercial standardisation.

SYNOPSIS: The conference took place in the International Congress Palace of Abidjan's Hotel Ivoire, and representing the host country were Mr Abdoulaye Kone, Minister for the Economy, Finance and Planning, and Agriculture Minister Mr. Denis Bra Kanon.

It was the first ISO technical meeting to be held in the Ivory Coast, and the proceedings got under way after an opening speech during the formal opening session was the ISO's assistant secretary general who described it as an historic occasion. He told delegates that the ISO had come of age. Although founded in 1946 it had taken 31 years for it effectively to span the globe.

The conference was the second major meeting on coffee to be held in the Ivory Coast within a week. The earlier conference was the 8th International Colloquium on Coffee, which attracted 500 delegates from five continents.
