Background: The Foreign Minister of Oman, Youssuf al Alawi, has been visiting France. He met his counterpart, French Foreign Minister Louis de Guiringaud, in Paris on Thursday (12 May).
SYNOPSIS: The two men met at the Foreign Ministry in the French capital, but details of the talks were not made known. Oman is one of a number of Middle East gulf states which has traditionally been under the British sphere of influence for more than eighty years through a series of friendship, commercial and navigation treaties, and through continued military assistance in putting down a long-fought insurrection in the nineteen-fifties.
The Omani Foreign Minister and Monsieur Guiringaud allowed newsmen to film them briefly before beginning their talks. France has a considerable interest in the Middle East generally, being a major arms supplier there. Oman, for its part, has a continuing interest in keeping its own armed forces fully supplied with the most modern equipment it can buy. The nation is one of the Middle East's oil producers, and France has a ten per cent interest in the national Omani oil company.
