    PRODUCTION AT 6,000 FEET BELOW THE SURFACE IS ALREADY STARTED - AHEAD OF SCHEDULE - AND FULL PRODUCTION SHOULD BE ACHIEVED BY 1970 WHEN AN ESTIMATED 1,100 EUROPEANS AND 11,000 AFRICANS WILL BE EMPLOYED THERE.

    BY THE YEAR 2022 - AT THE ESTIMATED END OF ITS LIFETIME - THE MINE-- THE WESTERN DEEP LEVELS MINE IN WESTERN TRANSVAAL -- WILL HAVE PRODUCED GOLD VALUED AT CURRENT PRICES AT MORE THAN GBP800 M STERLING.

    PLANNING - IT STARTED 20 YEARS AGO - WAS BASED ON THE LIKELIHOOD OF THE MINE REACHING A FINAL DEPTH OF ABOUT 13,000 FEET. AT PRESENT, THE DEEPEST MINE IN THE WORLD - EAST RAND PROPRIETARY ALSO IN WESTERN TRANSVAAL -- IS DOWN TO 11,000 FEET.

    MAJOR PROBLEMS IN MINE PENETRATION INCLUDE OVERCOMING THE REMOVAL OF NATURAL WATER DEPOSITS, HEAT AND VENTILATION. AIR PUMPERS AND UNDERGROUND COOLING PLANT WILL CONTINUE TO BE INCREASED AS THE MINE GOES DEEPER.
