  • Description

AS FRANCE MOVED INTO THE FINAL STAGES OF THE CAMPAIGN FOR THE FIRST ROUND OF THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS, THE GAULLISTS MOUNTED AN INTENSE FINAL DRIVE TO WIN A SOLID SHARE ON SUNDAY'S BALLOT TO PROVE THAT THEY CAN SURVIVE WITHOUT GENERAL DE GAULLE. THEIR CANDIDATE, EX-PREMIER GEORGES POMPIDOU YESTERDAY (29 MAY) FLEW HUNDREDS OF MILES OVER CENTRAL AND EASTERN FRANCE AT THE CLIMAX OF HIS HIGH-SPEED CAMPAIGN.

IN THE GAULLIST RALLY AT CLERMONT-FERRAND, THE INDUSTRIAL CITY IN CENTRAL FRANCE, M. POMPIDOU WAS ACCOMPANIED BY FORMER FINANCE MINISTER VALERY GISCARD D'ESTAING, WHO HAS GIVEN THE GAULLIST CANDIDATE VALUABLE SUPPORT ON BEHALF OF HIS INDEPENDENT REPUBLICANS, THE SECOND LARGEST PARTY IN THE PRESENT NATIONAL ASSEMBLY.

    M. GISCARD D'ESTAING SPOKE FIRST, AND POURED SCORN ON THE PROMISES OF RIVAL PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES. FROM M. POMPIDOU HE ASKED ONLY FOUR, OF WHICH THE MOST IMPORTANT WAS FOR CONFIDENCE AND ECONOMIC STABILITY.

    M. POMPIDOU, APPEALED IN HUMOROUS MOOD TO THE OBSTINACY AND TENACITY OF THE PEOPLE OF CENTRAL FRANCE, THEN SPOKE SERIOUSLY OF THE COUNTRY'S NEED FOR A MAN OF THE MOMENT. AS IN RECENT BROADCASTS HE STRESSED THAT HE STOOD FOR CHANGE.
