  • Description

SEVEN COURSE RECORDS FELL DURING THE SECOND DAY OF THE HENLEY ROYAL REGATTA ON THE RIVER THAMES TODAY (THURSDAY). MOST OF THEM WERE BROKEN IN THE DAY WHEN CREWS HAD THE ADVANTAGE OF A STRONG WIND
AN OUTSTANDING FEAT CAME FROM MARTIN STUDACH AND MELCHIOR BURGIN OF THE GRASSHOPPER CLUB OF ZURICH IN SWITZERLAND. THEY CLIPPED AN INCREDIBLE 14 SECONDS FROM THE PREVIOUS DOUBLE SCULLS RECORD WHILE WINNING THEIR HEAT FOR THE DOUBLE SCULLS CHALLENGE CUP AGAINST HERMAN BOELEN AND JIM ENTERS FROM THE ROEIVEREENIGING WILLEM III CLUB, HOLLAND. THE SWISS PAIR FINISHED IN 7 MINUTES 3 SECONDS.

ONE OF THE DAY'S BIGGEST SHOCKS CAME WHEN TWO LONDON DOCK WORKERS, RAY EASTERLING AND JOHN McCARTHY, OF THE POPLAR, BLACKWALL AND DISTRICT ROWING CLUB, DEFEATED THE CANADIAN OLYMPIC CHAMPIONS, GEORGE HUNGERFORD AND ROGER JACKSON OF THE VANCOUVER ROWING CLUB, IN THEIR HEAT OF THE SILVER GOBLETS AND NICKALLS' CHALLENGE CUP. THERE WAS A COLLISION OF OARS SOME 200 METRES FROM THE END, AND THE ENGLISHMEN QUICKLY RECOVERED AND DREW AWAY TO WIN BY 1 1/4 LENGTHS IN 7 MINUTES 49 SECONDS.

IN ANOTHER HEAT FOR THE SAME TROPHY, EAST GERMANY'S EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS, PIETER GORNY AND GUNTER BERGAU OF THE A.S.K.V. VORWAERTS, ROSTOCK CLUB, ALSO REACHED THE SEMI-FINALS BY CLOCKING 7 MINUTES 35 SECONDS TO BEAT A BRITISH PAIR, M. HALL AND R. A. NAPIER OF THE LEANDER CLUB. THIS WINNING TIME IMPROVED BY TEN SECONDS THE RECORD THE SAME PAIR SET YESTERDAY IN THEIR FIRST HEAT.

THE 1964 OLYMPIC CHAMPIONS, VESPER BOAT CLUB OF THE UNITED STATES, GAVE A BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE WHEN THEY SET A COURSE RECORD IN THE GRAND CHALLENGE CUP FOR EIGHTS. NO CREW IN THE HISTORY OF THE REGATTA -- FIRST HELD IN 1839 -- HAS EVER COVERED THE COURSE ON ONE MILE 550 YARDS (ABOUT 2,300 METRES) SO FAST.

VESPER, FROM PHILADELPHIA, WHO HAD FOUR OF THEIR TOKYO GOLD MEDALLISTS IN THE BOAT, CLOCKED 6 MINUTES 18 SECONDS TO BEAT THEIR COMPATRIOTS FROM HARVARD UNIVERSITY BY TWO-THIRDS OF A LENGTH. THEY LOWERED THE RECORD BY FIVE SECONDS. HARVARD WERE ALSO INSIDE THE OLD MARL. THERE WAS NEVER MORE THAN HALF A LENGTH BETWEEN THE TWO CREWS UNTIL 50 METRES FROM THE FINISH.
