CONGO-BRAZZAVILE SEVERED RELATIONS WITH CONGO-KINSHASA LAST WEDNESDAY NIGHT (9 OCTOBER) AS A RESULT OF THE EXECUTION IN KINSHASA OF FORMER REBELLION LEADER PIERRE MULELE A FEW HOURS EARLIER.

    LORRIES LOADED WITH GOODS AND PERSONNEL FROM THE EMBASSY LEFT BRAZZAVILLE TO THE WHARF OF THE CONGO RIVER FOR THE JOURNEY TO NEIGHVOURING CONGO-KINSHASA ACROSS THE RIVER.

    THE CHARGE D'AFFAIRES OF THE EMBASSY OF CONGO-KINSHASA M. AKAFOMO, ALSO LEFT THE CITY LAST THURSDAY.

    IN ANNOUNCING THE BREAK OF RELATIONS, CAPTAIN MARIEN NGOUBI, PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF THE REVOLUTION ACCUSED CONGO-KINSHASA OF KIDNAPPING AND INTERNATIONAL PIRACY IN ITS TREATMENT OF MULELE.

    MULELE, AGED 39, HAD RETURNED HOME VOLUNTARILY BELIEVING HE WOULD BENEFIT FROM AN AMNESTY. HE WAS EXECUTED BY FIRING SQUAD.

    CAPTAIN NGOUABI SAID HIS GOVERNMENT HAD BEEN SHOCKED BY THE BAD FAITH OF CONGO-KINSHASA AND WOULD TAKE UP THE MATTER WITH THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY.

    THE COUNCIL HAD DECIDED TO RECALL ITS CHARGE D'AFFAIRES IN CONGO-KINSHASA AND TO BREAK OFF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS, HE DECLARED.

    THE BOARDER BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES WAS OFFICIALLY CLOSED YESTERDAY (FRIDAY).
