The 25th. Zionist Congress - supreme organ of the World Zionist Organisation - opened its 2 weeks of deliberations in the House of Nations, Jerusalem, Israel, Dec. 27. Dr. Nahum Goldmann, President of the Organisation, spoke of "The Jewish People, the State of Israel, and the Zionist Movement," in his opening address.
Other speeches of welcome were made by Israeli President Ben Zvi and Chief Rabbi Nissim. Prominent among the 1,300 delegates from 34 countries were Israeli Premier Ben Gurion, Foreign Minister Golda Mier, and Dr. Israel Brodie, Chief Rabbi in England.
Main purpose of the Congress - known as the international Jewry's Parliament - is to plan the immigration of a further 500,000 Jews to Israel in the next ten years.
Founded by Theodor Herzl, the Organisation's first congress was held in Basle, Switzerland, in 1897. Since 1948, Zionist bodies have raised about GBP535 million, making them the largest voluntary fund raising bodies in the world. They have founded 624 villages, and brought one million immigrants to Israel.
