  • Description

Sporadic outbursts against the Ecuador government's strong measures to combat inflation, broke into open rebellion November 7, forcing the resignation of President Jose Maria Velasco Ibarra, the next day.

Crowds in the streets of Quito, the capital, demonstrated against President Ibarra, who had arrested his rival, Vice President Arosemena, together with nine members of Congress. Police and militia, loyal to Ibarra, struggled to keep order all day November 7, throwing tear gas bombs and riding their horses into the crowds. But the following day air force units, supporting Arosemena, carried out bombing raids in the city of Quito and gained the upper had, forcing Ibarra to give up the Presidency and go into hiding in the Argentine Embassy.

November 9, Carlos Julio Arosemena was due to take the oath as Ecuador's new President.
