MR SEAN LEMASS YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) BEGAN A NEW TERM AS PRIME MINISTER OF THE IRISH REPUBLIC.

  • Description

MR SEAN LEMASS YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) BEGAN A NEW TERM AS PRIME MINISTER OF THE IRISH REPUBLIC.HE WAS RE-ELECTED BY A MAJORITY OF FIVE IN THE FIRST MEETING OF THE 18TH DAIL (PARLIAMENT) FOLLOWING THE RECENT GENERAL ELECTION.

MR LEMASS, WHO IS 65, ANNOUNCED HIS NEW CABINET YESTERDAY.AT THE SAME TIME IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT MR JAMES DILLON, 63-YEAR-OLD LEADER OF FINE GAEL -- THE MAIN OPPOSITION PARTY -- HAD RESIGNED.MR DILLON HAS BEEN REPLACED BY MR LIAM COSGRAVE, A FORMER EXTERNAL AFFAIRS MINISTER AND SON OF THE FIRST PRESIDENT OF THE IRISH FREE STATE, MR WILLIAM T.COSGRAVE.

THE LEADERSHIP CHANGE IN THE OPPOSITION WAS NOT UNEXPECTED IN DUBLIN.THE REASON GIVEN WAS MR DILLON'S AGE.AT THE GENERAL ELECTION, IN WHICH MR LEMASS' FIANNA FAIL PARTY RETAINED POWER WITH AN OVERALL VOTING MAJORITY OF ONE, THE FINE GAEL PARTY DID MUCH WORSE THAN THEY HAD EXPECTED.

THE CABINET ANNOUNCED BY MR LEMASS YESTERDAY SHOWS SIX CHANGES FROM THE OUTGOING ONE.THE RESHUFFLE SUBSTANTIALLY LOWERED THE AVERAGE AGE OF THE GOVERNMENT AN THERE NOW ARE YOUNG MEN IN MOST KEY POSTS.

MR FRANK AIKEN HAS BEEN REAPPOINTED MINISTER FOR EXTERNAL AFFAIRS AND HAS ALSO BEEN NAMED AS THE NEW DEPUTY PREMIER.

GIVING THE CABINET DETAILS, MR LEMASS FORECASTS THAT THE PRESENT DAIL SHOULD LAST ITS FULL TERM INTO MID-1970.
