Background: CADARACHE -- FRANCE'S LATEST ATOMIC CENTRE -- IS NOW WELL UNDER CONSTRUCTION.ALREADY THE CENTRE, WHICH COVERS AN AREA OF 1,600 HECTARES (3,500 ACRES), HAS BEEN CHRISTENED THE "VALLEY OF REACTORS".BY 1965, CADARACHE AND KARLSRUHE, IN GERMANY, ARE EXPECTED TO BECOME THE MOST IMPORTANT EUROPEAN CENTRES OF PLUTONIUM RESEARCH.

THERE ARE SEVERAL TYPES OF REACTOR AT THE CADARACHE CENTRE.THE MOST IMPORTANT ARE THE 'RAPSODIE', AND 'PEGASE! 'RAPSODIE' IS OF THE "FAST-MOVING NEUTRONS" TYPE, YIELDING ENERGY EQUIVALENT TO 600,000 TONS OF COAL, AND SCIENTISTS HOPE TO RAISE THIS CAPACITY TO THE EQUIVALENT OF 1,700,000 TONS.THE 'PEGASE' REACTOR, USING THE WATER AND GAS METHOD, IS ALREADY OPERATIONAL, AND IS USED FOR TESTING BARS OF NATURAL URANIUM FUEL.THE URANIUM UNDER TEST HERE, WILL LATER BE USED AT THE ATOMIC CENTRES UNDER CONSTRUCTION AT CHINON, AND BRITTANY, FOR THE FRENCH ELECTRICITY BOARD.

M.GASTON PALEWSKI, FRENCH MINISTER OF STATE, RESPONSIBLE FOR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH, VISITED THE CADARACHE CENTRE LAST WEEK.HE TOURED THE PROJECT, WHICH UP TO NOW HAS COST 450 MILLION FRANCS, AND AN ESTIMATED 1100 -1200 MILLION MORE WILL BE SPENT BEFORE THE COMPLETION OF THE FIRST PART OF THE PLANT.1300 PEOPLE WILL BE EMPLOYED AT THE CENTRE BY THE END OF 1963, AND A TOTAL OF 2,000, BY 1965.

ONE OF THE IMPORTANT PROJECTS ALREADY UNDER WAY AT THE CENTRE, IS THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE MOTOR FOR THE ATOMIC-POWERED FRENCH SUBMARINE, Q 251.WHEN COMPLETED IT WILL DISPLACE 7,000 TONS.
