  • Description

Manila - one of the most congested cities in Asia - has recently acted to relieve its traffic problems.

A Government decree, effective over the weekend (19-20 May), has banned the famous "jeepney" passenger vehicles from the city's main streets.

The jeepneys, which are really converted vans and light trucks, were once the main form of transportation for Manila's working class population. Over the years, they gained a reputation for being gaily decorated with paintwork murals and chrome fittings and for having loud horns and bells adding to the general effect. They once stopped anywhere to pick up and not down passengers, bringing chaos to already over-crowded Manila streets.

Over the weekend, however, Manila citizens suddenly found themselves forced to walk to special jeepney depots for their rides. The jeepneys now travel on special router and have special stopping areas.

The Government has ordered more conventional buses to cope with the overflow of passengers, and the idea seems to be working. Car owners are reportedly pleased with the Government decree, and the streets are at last beginning to look controlled.
